Modern Water filter pitchers are the one of the best way to remove contaminants from your drinking water, but are water filter pitchers effective?

Most of the Water filter pitchers are not subject to the same standards as compact in size, easy to carry and whole home filtration. It is Not sure whether the materials are BPA-free or phthalate-free. This also means you cannot be sure of what the filtration media is comprised of and how effectively it filters.

The pitchers have a replaceable charcoal filter that are filled with activated carbon granules. The charcoal pieces are porous and have a large surface area.

These particles capture impurities and contaminants through a process known as adsorption. Activated charcoal is great for removing chlorine (added as part of the treatment process at the municipal water supply) and some other impurities and chemicals, but there are limits to the contaminants that these pitchers can remove.

 Charcoal cannot make hard water softer, nitrates, heavy metals or microbes. Unfortunately, most water pitchers also cannot remove lead or fluoride.
When considering filtration options, therefore, it’s always a good idea to have your water tested and then choose the best filtration option for you and your situation. If you need to remove lead or other heavy metals, you may need to investigate reverse osmosis or other filtration systems.

What Contaminants Do They Remove?
Government-sponsored testing of water filters shows that these activated charcoal filters can remove many basic contaminants. These impurities include those that can make water smell and taste bad, as well as medications that don’t get completely removed during the water treatment process. In fact, the Environmental Protection Agency recognizes activated carbon filtration as one of the best ways to remove various industrial chemicals from drinking water.



For a more complete list, water pitcher filters may remove some, or all, of the following, although efficacy will vary by unit and how often the filters are changed:


Water pitchers take up valuable real estate in your refrigerator.
Using only a water filter pitcher means that the water you use to clean your clothes, wash your dishes and hands, cook and make tea/coffee, and take showers and baths is still contaminated water. The ice from your ice maker will be made with contaminated water. The water coming through your bathroom faucets and shower heads will also be unfiltered, contaminated water. Why does that matter? Because 

The cost adds up. Purchasing a Water Filter Pitchers is cheaper than a high-quality water filter…at first. Add that to the cost of the constant filter replacements and you could have purchased a truly protective, on-demand water filtration system instead.

The main point with a water pitcher is that it providesincomplete protection that is based only a price point and perceived ease of use. You will not have very good protection from water contamination for yourself or our family with only a water filter pitcher in your fridge.
